What: Mountain Bike events of 82-miles, 91-miles and 123-miles!. Two optional loops - Loop 1 (82miles), Loop 2. (91miles), or both (123miles)

Full Route Description
The route starts out with a 25-mile section of road (6-miles pavement, 19-miles of dirt) that will lead you to a central place, called the Natural Gas Compressor Station (NCGS). From here there will be 2 opional loops. Loop 1 will cover 32-miles and Loop 2 will cover 41 miles. After completing both of these, you still have the 25-mile journey back to Rio Rancho. We’ve seen jackrabbits, deer, antelope and even a mountain lion on this dirt road back to Rio Rancho - it may be road, but it it is primitive and scenic!If you choose to do just Loop 1, you will cover 82-miles and ~5300-ft of climbing. If you choose to do just Loop 2, you will cover 91miles and ~5900 ft of climbing. If you choose to do both Loop 1 and 2, you will cover 123-miles and ~8400-ft of climbing.

************************************************************************ Detailed Route Instructions: Begin at Turtle Mountain Brewery/High Desert Cycles Parking lot1. Starting from the new Turtle Mountain Brewery/High Desert Cycles Parking lot head out (turn right) on Southern Road (pavement) for 6.5-miles and turn Right on the unmarked Encino Road. Note that Encino Road is the first Right after Gallup Road. This is important - because for some reason Encino Road is the only unmarked road out here!2. Encino Road eventually becomes Pipeline Road - go straight as an arrow on this dirt road for 19-miles until eventually coming to a Natural Gas Compressor Station. This NGCS is the central point for the following Loop 1 and Loop 2. Riders have the option of doing both loops, or either of the Loops - depending on ability and desire.It’s really all that simple - the choice of 2 loops from the NGCS. If you can make it here (it only took you 2 right turns! - then you should have no problem from here on out!This Gas Compressor Station is located at the intersections of Pipeline Road and Cabezon Road (CR26) - shown below with the 2 loops.

From the Natural Gas Compressor Station (NGCS), the two Loops are as follows.
**************************************************************************************************************************** Loop # 1:1. From the NGCS turn Right and head north on CR 26 and over to the very popular White Mesa Mountain Bike Trail network. This will be approximately 8 miles. 2. Once at the White Mesa Trails Parking Lot (complete with BLM sign and split rail fencing), turn LEFT into the network.3. You will now spend a lot of time here at the White Mesa Trails! You will do a simple figure 8 route of epic singletrack and then back to the NGCS. 4. The White Mesa trails are marked with maps at each intersection! Each intersection is numbered. Follow the directions via the numbered intersections - White Mesa Route: 1-2-3-4-6-7-8-9-10-11-12-13-14-15-16-17-18-19-22-12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 back at parking lot and then back on the 8 mile road section to the Gas Compressor Station. Note the change above in RED. You will climb the swithbacks from point 5 to point 4 (Gas line cut out) to get back on the ridge and ride the ridge in reverse to get back to the WM parking lot. This avoids the sandy boring double track road.
- Map of WHITE MESA TRAILS is located hereNow that you have concluded Loop 1 - you have the choice to head back to Turtle Mountain Brewery (eat and drink your way to recovery!) or take on the 2nd challenege of the day - Loop 2!!!!Before you decide, look at some of the trails at the White Mesa that you will ride! VERY EPIC!



*********************************************************************************************************************Ok, so if you choose to do Loop 2 - here is the route; Loop # 2: This loop is 41-miles of graded dirt road and goes around Cabezon Peak. Elevation gain will be 3175-ft.1. From the NGCS continue west on Pipeline Road and do the epic loop around Cabezon Peak. BLM details here - click on brochure.2. Ride Pipeline Road for a few miles turn on the sharp LEFT to Ridge Road (BLM1113) which first heads south, then veers west and finally onto to CR279. (Note that if you miss this turn - and just keep heading west, you will eventually come to CR279. It is better and more fun to ride BLM1113 - but if you miss it, you will not get lost.) 3. Turn Left on CR2794. Turn Left on BLM1114 and then all the way back to Ridge Road - BLM1113 at the bottom the Cabezon Loop.5. Return on BLM1113 to Pipeline Road, turn Right This loop is 41-miles. The other 8 miles shown on the map below and the elevation chart are from the NGCS to the White Mesa Parking lot. As you can see not much climbing on that section of road, and relatively moderate for the other.

Information to use for time estimation: Since the first portion of the ride is rough dirt road (Southern to Encino (Pipeline)) to the NGCS, people will have the option of riding either Loop 1, Loop 2, or both. Turtle Mountain to Loop 1 and back to Turtle Mountain is 82-miles. This will be a challenge for many. Add on Loop 2 and it’s 123-miles.Those with greater ambitions can tack on Loop 2. Loop 2 Riders will be looking at almost 123-miles in one day, but only 8400-ft of climbing.For those attempting both loops - they can be done in any order; Loop 1 the 2, or Loop 2 then 1. Most will ride the loops in sequential order as the Loop 1 singletrack at White Mesa truly makes this ride epic!All riders will need to bring lights and wear helmets. Water and Food will not be available on the route unless you place your own cache or bring along a water filter (water is available in numerous cow ponds) We will try to coordinate a cache or SAG at the NCGS - but if no volunteers come forward, then you will be on your own. Note that 6:50AM start time is mandatory.Water/Food Resupply: Outside of a SAG at the NCGS, the only commercial place to restock is at the Giant Gas Station in San Ysidro, (located off course) which is several miles out of the way. However, numerous cow ponds, the Rio Puerco and some wells (the most popular one is at CR 279 & BLM 1113 ~ complete with spigots) are along the route for rewatering with a filter. These sources are non-potable and see heavy cattle use so definately make sure to filter before drinking. Also some houses are near Cabezon peak if you absolutely need help in the event of an emergency. The village of San Luis is a few miles to the north of Cabezon peak as well.
This primitive road is part of the White Mesa network and you will ride it on the return trip after riding the singletrack.

Ridge Road is very well marked and easy to navigate around Cabezon Peak. Remember there are 2 loops here and you can choose to just ride to the NCGS, do one loop, or do both! Epic adventures for all.Water and food must be supplied on your own. If you make it to White Mesa and do not feel you have enough to make it back, then you will need to go into San Ysidro and stock up at the general store. If you wish not to do this, then either carry over 140-oz of water or bring a water filtration device. If you choose to leave a cache of water or food, please remove all of your trash at the end of the ride, or the next day.

I plan to do it…good tune up for DtD!!! We gonna have a Loop2 Catagory (91miles)? I never did make it out to Cabazon Peak last year!!! Then again, I guess I could do some laps around the Brewry and get the Century in…*;o)

BTW, you can also do out and backs on Norther and Souther to get a little exta milage to minimize the laps around the brewry…

My body and my bike seem to be working great this year, so I will be there for the long ride, and at least one beer later.
Is there a seperate category for singlespeed cyclocross bikes? What about recumbents? What about mtb’s with street tires? What about unicycles with gears? What about………….

Rode White Mesa today! Trails are in great shape–no mud and only a little bit of ice. So if you are looking to get a ride in, white mesa is the place to go.

Hey Eytan, yep this is easier than SFBFL, but it is a bit longer if you do the whole route, ~123 miles…, but the average climbing is significantly less… We’ll be doing a pre-ride next Saturday, Feb 2nd… Not the whole route, but I personally hope to get in Loop1 (82 miles)

Yes, you will need some type of thorn protection, not the worst place, but I have had issues out there. Slime tubes, Stans tubless kit, tubless tires with stans, etc. will all suffice.

We had a good turnout for the STDC pre-ride of approx 10 riders. The weather was great for this time of year. Cold in the morning as expected, warmed up nicely during the day and got a little chilly on the fast descent down Southern back to TM in the afternoon… Jeff Hemperley drove in from Rico during the middle of the night and slept in his truck at the parking lot for a few hours before the rest of us arrived.
In classic Jeff Hemperley style, after holding up the start for 10 minutes while he finished getting ready, Jeff took off like a bullet on his SS and strung the group out on the long climb up Southern. I chased on my SS and kept Jeff in sight but wasn’t willing to blow up just to close the gap. By the time we got to Encino Rd Donnie caught up to me. We then caught up to Jeff at Encino and Northern (Water tank) where Jeff’s bro Jerry was stopped in his truck. We convinced Jerry to go buy a few jugs of water and meet us out at White Mesa, which he did. Rich soon rode up while we where stopped. From there it was the 4 of us till just before the NGCS. In the distance we could see two riders spread apart. We waited for the first rider which was Doug, who was riding very strong on his 60 mile test crusade. See his post on MTBR. By the time Doug left the group, the next rider, Mike was rolling up. From there the 5 of us (Mike, Jeff, Donnie, Rich and Lenny) continued on to do the White Mesa loop. Jerry was on the road to White Mesa looking for us and we had him go out to the NGCS and drop off some water and then meet us back at WM. We soon came across Doug stopped at his midpoint getting ready to head back. The WM loop was fun and uneventful, except the final decent off the middle spine which was a little muddy, so ya had to let off the brakes and prey!! The final dirt/sandy road out off WM was painful. We are talking about changing the route slightly for the SYDC event to avoid this sandy double track and come back up on the Devil’s back-bone using the new switch backs that FooMTB put in at the Gas Line cut out.… After WM the 5 of us rode back to the NGCS where we ran into John & Liz, who came out on their tandem MTB and did their own partial ride of Loop 2. We stocked up on water that Jerry had left us and all start back home. Mike, John & Liz soon dropped OTB, so it was the 4 of us (Jeff, Donnie, Rich & Lenny) all the way back into town, almost.. We were cruising down the final descent on Southern, got to the light at Sara and looked over to see John and Liz on the tandem. They had that puppy flying down Southern… They jumped in with us on the side walk for the final few minutes back to TM. We rolled in to the parking lot with 84 miles in 7:53. Just under my goal of 8 hours… :-). The funny thing was that John and Liz also did 84 miles on their partial Loop 2 adventure… Mike rolled in a few minutes later.
Not sure what happened to the other two riders (James and ??,). Sorry about the rocket start guys… but that is how these events and pre-rides go… Hope you guys had a good pre-ride and got to see some of what the route is like.
We all then spent a few hours at TM drinking and eating and taking about biking…

That’s right! Tim Nelson and Anne Marie Peck will be riding the ROCKET-SHIP… our Ellsworth full suspension tandem for the ride…. (Remember no drafting!!)
We hope to see Lizz and John out there on their tandem as well.
We definitely look forward to seeing the gang… and having a good start to a great season.
