 Please make sure to read all rules for this.  This is fully unsupported and you will need to be self-sufficient in order to complete this.  The rules are located HERE. 

This one is brought to you by the great folks in Gallup, NM.  Please contact Bill Siebersma (bsieb@q.com) for all questions.

When:  Saturday, October 20th, 2012

- 7am sharp for 100 milers (2 loops)
- 9:30am sharp for 50 milers (1 loop)

What:  An approx 50-mile looped course.  100-mile riders will ride in one direction and cover 50-miles and then return on the same route in the opposite direction to reach 100-miles.  50-mile riders will complete the loop once, as shown on the map.

Where:  McGaffey Lake, NM.

Take I-40 to Exit 33, 7-miles east of Gallup, NM. Turn south on NM 400 and proceed 10 miles to the end of the asphalt pavement. Continue down the gravel road almost a 1/2 mile and turn left at the far end of McGaffey (sort of) Lake. Stay to the left and drive back to the two buildings behind the lake area.

  – No warranty, express or implied, use at your own discretion.
  – Some Garmin users  can download directly into their supported devices from the Garmin Connect page below. Currently does not work for the Edge 500. Be sure to test “Do course” to make sure the track dowloaded properly. 
  – You can also export the track to GPX from this page, load into TopoFusion and then download to your GPS. Use this option for non Garmin users and those that above option dosen’t work.

2011 NMES Zuni Mountain 100 Route Description
Changes from 2010 are highlighted in Red below

Sign log sheet & enter start time ( if not starting we main group) and please be sure to sign-out

  1. Start- McGaffey Wildlife Center driveway gate 
                 *To McGaffey Lake Rd, turn right, then first right after lake area.  (.5 mi.)        
  2. Train Canyon Rd .4 mi. to Lower Sawmill Trail turnoff on left.
  3. Lower Sawmill Trail to Purple Haze Trail
    *Cross gravel road at 3+ mi.
                      *Cross fence at 4+ mi.
  4. Purple Haze Trail 4.75 mi. to Milk Ranch Trail 
    *Viewpoint Loop at 3.6 mi, stay left or you will do extra non-bonus miles!
                      *.2 mi N on pavement beyond end of Purple Haze to Milk Ranch Trail
                         (road closed sign) social trail head area on left.
  5. Milk Ranch Trail 4.1 mi. to Quasimodo Trail 
    *Lower Milk Ranch Intersection .10 mi, go right on single track
                      *Milk Ranch Canyon 1.54 mi (cross rippled rock to left side of canyon)
                      *Bear Cave 2.89 mi
                      *Upper Milk Ranch Intersection 4.1 mi, go right on single track
  6. Quasimodo Trail 4.75 mi. to Berma Trail
      *McFarren Lake Rd .10 mi. cross road & continue on single track
                        *Go left down Burma Trail at Sign Post #12.
  7. Berma Trail 2.5 mi. to Hilso Trailhead - 
             *Follow singletrack down to Hilso Trailhead
              CONTROL YOUR SPEED, SLOW DOWN FOR BERMS!!!
                          *Left on gravel road at end of singletrack just above
                          Hilso Trail Head
  8. Stuck Truck Trail 3 mi. to Smokin Handelbar Trail
                         *Follow closed two track west from Hilso TH
                         (Orange/White checkered flagging)
                          *Left at junction 2.5 mi.
                          *Left on Smokin Handelbar Trail
  9. Smokin Handlebar Trail .75 mi. to Lost Lake Rim Trail
                        *Smokin Handlebar Gate, continue single track to left
                        *Enter Lost Lake Rim Trail at Sign Post #8
  10. Lost Lake Rim Trail 7 mi. to Quaking Aspen Trail
    *Pine Tree Overlook .2 mi.
                      *Continue straight at Sign Post #11
                      *Join Quaking Aspen Trail at Sheet Rock Tank (Sign Post #5)
  11. Quaking Aspen Trail 2.8 mi. to Y2K Trail
    *1.5 mi. new cattleguard/fence crossing
                      *Enter Y2K at Sign Post #2
                      *If you miss this turn you will arrive at Hilso Trail Head. OOPS!                                                            
  12. Y2K Trail 4.25 mi. to Turkey Nest Trail
    *Cross 2 track at top of climb at ~3 mi.
                      *Turn left on Turkey Nest Trail at Signpost #7
  13.  Turkey Nest Trail to Lower Plush Trail .5 mi.
    *Stay left at Turkey Nest/ Lower Plush Intersection (.5 mi.)
  14.  Lower Plush Trail to Malcom Trail
    *Cross gravel road
                      *Turn right at Malcom Trail Intersection                                              
  15.  Malcom Trail to Upper Plush Trail
    *Stay left at Malcom Tank
                      *Stay right at unmarked single track intersection
                      *Turn Left at Upper Plush intersection.
  16. Upper Plush Trail to Torreon Trail
    *Continue straight ahead onto Torreon
  17. Torreon Trail 2 mi, to Strawberry Canyon Trail 
    *Cross fence right after rocky beginning, always on the single track, another fence crossing, road crossing, road/fence-gate crossing into bumpy meadow, cross fence at other end, look for the single track angling ahead, then up shallow drainage to Strawberry Trail. Continue straight ahead at the Strawberry Canyon Bridge.
  18. Strawberry Canyon Trail to Tampico Trail (1 mi.)
    *Hope you have a pedestrian bell
    *Turn right onto Tampico Trail
  19. Tampico Trail to Mike’s Rippin Trail  (4 mi.)
    *Galvanized stock tanks after a long descent
                      *Fence crossing, extremely rocky, loose section
                      *Go straight across lookout tower parking lot on your right, cross steel cable,         
                       turn right onto Mike’s Rippin
  20. Mike’s Rippin Trail 1.43 mi. to  McGaffey Wildlife Center 
    *Don’t turn off on the two track… follow the single track!
                      *Left on gravel road at bottom, over cattle guard, then right…
  21. McGaffey Wildlife Center- Finish 
    *Record time on log sheet          
    *REMEMBER your mileage may vary!
