Is there any cost for the race?

  2. Lenny Says:

Nope, no fees. Please read the NMES description on the home page and the Rules and Regulations under the Must Reads for all the details.

  3. David Hughes Says:

Lenny – Good job on the site, I like the new layout/format. I won’t make this one, I broke my collar bone 5 weeks ago. Spinning a wind trainer in the garage, can’t even get the arm to the handlebars yet.
We will see how things heal.

  4. lennygoodell Says:

Hey David, sorry to hear that about your broken collar bone! Hope ya have a speedy recovery and can make the Cochiti event.

  5. danroberts Says:

Lenny – I’d like to do the pre-ride b4 registering…is that still a go and what are the logistics?

  6. lennygoodell Says:

Hi Dan, pre-ride is still on for this coming Sat. Jan 31st. Ride starts promptly at 8am from the Turtle Mountain/High Desert parking lot. We’ll be riding the 84 mile White Mesa loop.

Note that we’ll start together and then split into groups of common abilities. I.e. this is not going to be a stay all together group ride… so if you got a buddy to ride with great, otherwise try to find someone close to your ability. Most important is please understand the route. This one is not hard… especially if you already are fimilar with White Mesa.

  7. lennygoodell Says:

Great pre-ride Yesterday!! Awesome weather with a slight tail wind pushing us home on the pipeline road. We had 7 people show up for the ride. Chris, Jeff, Lenny and Rich did the full Loop 1 (82 miles). Rich rode from/to his home so he got over 100 miles. Oscar, Mark and Steve rode a portion of the route. I think Steve got in 60 miles. Not sure about Oscar & Mark’s mileage.

There is now a dirt berm someone (ATVs??) created to get over the fence at the first locked gate. Take the sandy road to the right when you approach the gate and you will see it, if it is still there in March…

    See ya on March 14th!!

  8. El Freako Says:

A great ride with Lenny and Chris. It was great to see Rich catch up to us on the way back to town. Looking forward to the big one in March.

  9. Rich Says:

Hey guys, just a heads up. That gas line road that heads South of Southern has a few big sand pits that you have to walk through, too long to ride. Ran out of water by the time I hit the volcanoes so I didn’t do that extra loop and ended right at 100 miles for the day. Hope we have good weather like this for the SYDC.

  10. DaGoat Says:

    Hey Folks,

Just wanted to put out the shout out that I’ll be your SAG Captain this year. I plan to be at the Turtle Mountain parking lot for the mass start, so bring your supplies. I’ll gather everything into the back of my truck and then drive out to the Compressor Station. I’ll park out there and leave my truck open. I plan to ride from there around Cabazon. Gonna try to keep it on the boil. It’s about 40 miles on the button, so if anyone wants a shorty come join the sesh.

    DaGoat

  11. lennygoodell Says:

    Hey Doug,
That will be awesome! Thanks for doing this!!

    -Lenny

  12. Mitch Fedak Says:

    Lenny,
I hate to tell ya, but I have to bag the SYDC this year. I will be in Crested Butte timing a ski race…$calls so rides get put aside…

  13. lennygoodell Says:

Hey Mitch, no problem. I’ll remove you from the registration page…

  14. Eytan Krasilovsky Says:

thanks daGoat for portaging our water!

Oscar, you got the white mesa loop down now so we don’t fall some mileage short? haha see ya there.

  15. El Freako Says:

    Thanks, Doug!!!!

  16. Oscar Arevalo Says:

Eytan, I was wonderin when you were going to show up. Myself and my friend Mark Martinez will practice the white mesa loop and go out and back to the NGCS this saturday. You’re more than welcome to join if you want? We did 45 mi on the pre-ride a couple of weeks ago. I hope I’m ready.

Thanks dagoat for takin our supplies! You’re a big help!

  17. Mallory from LLS TNT Says:

    Hi,
I work for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team In Training and was wondering if possible we could give you some of our flyers to put in your race bags? We are part of the largest non-profit sports training program in the country; participating by fundraising for marathons, triathlons, cycling and hiking events and most importantly the CURE OF BLOOD CANCERS! Our upcoming season of information meetings begins in April and we are getting started on marketing now.

If someone could please contact me ASAP that would great!

    Thanks!!! :)

  18. lennygoodell Says:

    Hi Mallory,
Sorry, since these the NMES are not official events, there are not any event bags or promotions.

  19. lennygoodell Says:

    SYDC Drop Bags

Doug “DaGoat” will be at the start Saturday morning to pickup everyone’s drop bags, which he will take to the NGCS.

All drop bags and items must be “Disposable”, i.e. don’t expect anything back after the event. Someone, not Doug, will be picking up leftovers and will throw away anything they don’t kept for themselves.

So if you have stuff in your drop bags that you don’t want to give up, make sure you grab it on your last pass by the NGCS.

    Thanks
    Lenny

  20. RJ Ponchione Says:

I’m sure I just haven’t been paying attention, and this has already been mentioned, but I don’t see a link to the waiver anymore. Has this been eliminated?

  21. lennygoodell Says:

Hey RJ, the waiver is now part of the registration. By signing up you have agreed to the on-line wavier.

  22. John Kay Says:

So what’s the course like when wet? Are we looking at 25 pounds of clay stuck to each tire the whole way?

  23. lennygoodell Says:

Most of the course will be fine, I think… :-) Actualy the sandy road sections will be better. I am optimistic that it will all be rideable.

Jeff Hemperley is going to drive the northern part of the course this afternoon on his way down from Rico, Co. He will call me with a report when he gets in town. If there are issues, I will post here and on the main SYDC page.

No post means that we are good to go, we.. still going… :-)

  24. Greg Kaufman Says:

Drove past White Mesa this morning on the way to work at Jemez Pueblo. It had about a half-inch of snow on it. It has been raining at the Pueblo this morning and is now snowing. Forecast here is for more snow tonight but no more that an inch accumulation. Having ridden White Mesa on occasions after wet weather, I know it gets pretty muddy at the south and south east portions of the loop. Pipeline road might be ok since it is not as clayey. Don’t know about Cabazon since I’ve only ridden there when it is dry. Hopefully Jeff will get a chance to check it out.

  25. lennygoodell Says:

    All,
Due to the current weather situation I am postponing this year’s SYDC.
Jeff Hemperley tried to drive out to White Mesa at about 3pm and turned around immediately so to not tear up the road.
With the additional forecast rain/snow tonight it is only going to get worse… :-(

Question for everyone is… reschedule for next weekend (3/21) or the weekend after that (3/28).

Please let me know what ya think by emailing to nmes@googlegroups.com

    Lenny

  26. Patrick Morrissey Says:

My vote, weather and road conditions permitting of course, would be for next weekend if possible!! Think of the benefits: you could leave your camelback filled till then and the water won’t get (as) stale. you won’t lose your peak fitness in only one week, so nobody has to adjust their season training schedule. the wind should really, really be blowing that weekend. the negative effects of corned beef and cabbage should have (mostly) worn off by then.

Lenny: thanks for putting this on, and for the heads up on the cancellation. Looking forward to the ride when it comes to pass!!

  27. Adam Meade Says:

Patrick, thank you, I was bummed because I “tapered” for this, now instead of a good week of training, I got a lazy week with nothing to hammer for. I sa next weekend, maybe its just me but I’m not sure that any of the folks interested in the Coyote classic do this sort f event.

NEXT WEEKEND, LETS GET IT DONE

    BTW…it is “dirty” century” right?

  28. Larry Russell Says:

    Hey Lenny,

You can’t imagine the dissapointment felt by the four of us who made the 7 hour drive from Colorado Friday, spent Money on a hotel and found ourselves standing alone Saturday morning at Turtle Mountain. You guys really thought posting at 10:30 pm the night before the ride was adequate notice. The good news is that we made the ride without you and enjoyed ourselves (great weather, managable mud). We appreciate you organizing this and are sorry we missed you but, recommend maybe better was of communicating changes next time.

  29. lennygoodell Says:

    Hi Larry,
The post was actually at 4:30pm. The server time is apperently not in the same time zone…

Sorry you made the long drive, glad you where able to do the ride. Did you ride the full course? White Mesa?

    -Lenny

  30. Eli Says:

The Mountainair 200km Brevet is scheduled for the 28th. (http://www.nmbrevets.com/id2.html) Sure it’s road, but maybe it would be better not to conflict. I vote for the 21st. I got a good 4 hour ride in the North and South Foothills of Albuquerque today. The trail conditions are great even if the weather is ominous. My sore neck and shoulders make me wonder if I would have made the White Mesa loop intact.

  31. lennygoodell Says:

SYDC rescheduled for 3/21 (next weekend)

    All,
I have decided to go with 3/21 for the rescheduled SYDC date.

If you can’t make this date, please post “I’m out” on the registration page.
If you had posted, “I’m out”, you have been removed from the registration, so please post “I’m in” again if you are in for the new date.

Jen, CCow, you where the only two that said for certain you are out for the 21st, so I went ahead and removed you, so no need to post.

Thanks everyone for your understanding and patients.
    Lenny

  32. FreddieJ Says:

Thanks to all who were involved and sorry to hear the folks who, drove from Colorado. But you did get to ride, good for you!!
I wasn’t ready for it but had wanted to follow DaGoat on the 40 miler around Cabezon will he be doing that next weekend anyway?
Thanks again to Lenny and all.

  33. Steve S. Says:

    Hey Lennie,

    I’m out for the 21st.

Thanks for everything you’ve done in prep for this race.

Oscar and Mark if you guys come down, ride like hell and have a blast.

    Steve

  34. Dan Durland Says:

    Lenny,

Thanks for the quick decision on the reschedule and all the work put into the NMES. Kara and I will be there, ready to roll on Saturday.

  35. Jeff Huser Says:

    Lenny,
A prudent move to postpone, rode white mesa portion Sun AM. The lower N section and some of the back side climbs had some wet clay sections when mixed with the gypsum made a nice and heavy plaster cast on the bike

  36. lennygoodell Says:

    Hi Freddie,
DaGoat is out of town this weekend. I spoke to him about any of his friends being interested in doing the previously planned 40 miler. He said he would check.

With DaGoat out of town we have lost our SAG. Would you be willing to do the SAG if you end up doing that ride?

  37. Freddie J. Says:

Thanks for the note Lenny, I’ve been sicckie/working and unable to train enough. sorry i won’t be able to go. Went for a 20 miler yesterday and got beat up. I know I would be really beaten on the 40. Sorry. Next year is the plan for now. Otherwise yes i could have. NEXT YEAR!!

  38. lennygoodell Says:

    SAG Support

All, we now have SAG support!!
Mark Dupuy, aka “Dup”, will be at the start to pickup drop bags. He will haul the goods out to the NGCS and drop them off.

All drop bags and items must be “Disposable”, i.e. don’t expect anything back after the event. Someone, not Dup, will be picking up leftovers and will throw away anything they don’t kept for themselves.

Also, Dup will have a large box for trash that he will leave at the NGCS. Please put your emptys in the box after you use them during the event so nothing blows away…

    Thanks!
    Lenny

  39. Jerry M. Hemperley Says:

Umm, what time do we meet, i suppose i miss that info, couldn’t find it..
    Please advise…

  40. Jerry M. Hemperley Says:

    Nevermind, I found the link…. kewlio… should be a beautiful day…

  41. Eli Says:

I am in for the White Mesa Loop.
    Eli

  42. Brent Bonwell Says:

Lenny, Thanks for organizing, Mark for delivering the good to the NGCS, and whoever is doing cleanup tomorrow. What beautiful day it was and a great ride. Hope you didn’t have any more flats on loop 2 and the way home.

  43. Eli Says:

Thank you Lenny for putting together a great ride. See you all on the trails.
    Eli
PS. Does anyone have a suspension that soaks up all of that washerboard? I feel that I have been working with a jackhammer all day.
