There is limited parking at Turtle Mountain and High Desert so please park in the overflow parking on Pinetree behind the Post Office. There is a walk way along the fence that takes you to the Turtle/High Desert parking lots. See map below.

Please make sure to read all rules for this. This is fully unsupported and you will need to be self-sufficient in order to complete this. The rules are located HERE.

Full Route Description
The route starts out with a 25-mile section of road (6-miles pavement, 19-miles of dirt) that will lead you to a central place, called the Natural Gas Compressor Station (NCGS). From here there will be 2 opional loops. Loop 1 will cover 32-miles andLoop 2 will cover 41 miles. After completing both of these, you still have the 25-mile journey back to Rio Rancho. We’ve seen jackrabbits, deer, antelope and even a mountain lion on this dirt road back to Rio Rancho – it may be road, but it it is primitive and scenic!If you choose to do just Loop 1, you will cover 82-miles and~5300-ft of climbing. If you choose to do just Loop 2, you will cover 91miles and ~5900 ft of climbing. If you choose to do both Loop 1 and 2, you will cover 123-miles and ~8400-ft of climbing.

Detailed Route Instructions:
Begin at Turtle Mountain Brewery/High Desert Cycles Parking lot1. Starting from the new Turtle Mountain Brewery/High Desert Cycles Parking lot head out (turn right) on Southern Road (pavement) for 6.5-miles and turn Right on the Encino Road (currently marked). Note that Encino Road is the first Right after Gallup Road (not marked on 1/31). EncinoRoad is the one with the water tank on it. Gallup looks like it goes to the water tank, but don’t be fooled. Pass it up andgo to the second road (Encino) that takes you to the water tank. Encino Road eventually becomes Pipeline Road – go straight as an arrow on this dirt road for 19-miles until eventually coming to a Natural Gas Compressor Station. This NGCS is the central point for the following Loop 1and Loop 2. Riders have the option of doing both loops, or either of the Loops – depending on ability and desire.It’s really all that simple – the choice of 2 loops from the NGCS. If you can make it here (it only took you 2 right turns! – then you should have no problem from here on out!This Gas Compressor Station is located at the intersections of Pipeline Road and CabezonRoad (CR26) – shown below with the 2 loops.

From the Natural Gas Compressor Station (NGCS), the two Loops are as follows.

Loop # 1:
1. From the NGCS turn Right and head north on CR 26 and over to the very popular White Mesa Mountain Bike Trail network. This will be approximately 8 miles.
2. Once at the White Mesa Trails Parking Lot (complete with BLM sign and split rail fencing), turn LEFT into the network.
3. You will now spend a lot of time here at the White Mesa Trails! You will do a simple figure 8 routeof epic singletrack and then back to the NGCS.
4. The White Mesa trails are marked with maps at each intersection! Each intersection is numbered. Follow the directions via the numbered intersections – White Mesa Route: 1-2-3-4-6-7-8-9-10-11-12-13-14-15-16-17-18-19-22-12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1back at parking lot and then back on the 8 mile road section to the Gas Compressor Station. Note the change above in RED. You will climb the swithbacks from point 5 to point 4 (Gas line cut out) to get back on the ridge and ride the ridge in reverse to get back to the WM parking lot. This avoids the sandy boring double track road.
Now that you have concluded Loop 1- you have the choice to head back to Turtle Mountain Brewery (eat and drink your way to recovery!) or take on the 2nd challenege of the day – Loop 2!!!!

Ok, so if you choose to do Loop 2 – here is the route;
Loop # 2:
This loop is 41-milesof graded dirt road andgoes around Cabezon Peak. Elevation gain will be 3175-ft.
1. From the NGCScontinue west on Pipeline Road anddo the epic loop around Cabezon Peak. BLM details here - click on brochure.
2. Ride Pipeline Road for a few miles turn on the sharp LEFT to Ridge Road (BLM1113) which first heads south, then veers west and finally onto to CR279. (Note that if you miss this turn – and just keep heading west, you will eventually come to CR279. It is better and more fun to ride BLM1113 – but if you miss it, you will not get lost.)
3. Turn Left on CR2794. Turn Left on BLM1114 and then all the way back to Ridge Road - BLM1113 at the bottom the Cabezon Loop.
4. Return on BLM1113 to Pipeline Road, turn Right This loop is 41-miles. The other 8 miles shown on the map below and the elevation chart are from the NGCS to the White Mesa Parking lot. As you can see not much climbing on that section of road, and relatively moderate for the other.

Information to use for time estimation: Since the first portion of the ride is rough dirt road (Southern to Encino (Pipeline)) to the NGCS, people will have the option of riding either Loop 1, Loop 2, or both. Turtle Mountain to Loop 1 and back to Turtle Mountain is 82-miles. This will be a challenge for many. Add on Loop 2 and it’s 123-miles.Those with greater ambitions can tack on Loop 2. Loop 2 Riders will be looking at almost 123-miles in one day, but only 8400-ft of climbing.For those attempting both loops – they can be done in any order; Loop 1 the 2, or Loop 2 then 1. Most will ride the loops in sequential order as the Loop 1 singletrack at White Mesa truly makes this ride epic!All riders will need to bring lights and wear helmets. Water and Food will not be available on the route unless you place your own cache or bring along a water filter (water is available in numerous cow ponds) We will try to coordinate a cache or SAG at the NCGS – but if no volunteers come forward, then you will be on your own. Note that 6:50AM start time is mandatory.Water/Food Resupply: Outside of a SAG at the NCGS, the only commercial place to restock is at the Giant Gas Station in San Ysidro, (located off course) which is several miles out of the way. However, numerous cow ponds, the Rio Puerco and some wells (the most popular one is at CR 279 & BLM1113 ~ complete with spigots) are along the route for rewatering with a filter. These sources are non-potableand see heavy cattle use so definately make sure to filter before drinking. Also some houses are near Cabezon peak if you absolutely need help in the event of an emergency. The village of San Luisis a few miles to the north of Cabezon peak as well.

Ridge Road is very well marked andeasy to navigate around Cabezon Peak. Remember there are 2 loops here and you can choose to just ride to the NCGS, do one loop, or do both! Epic adventures for all.Water and food must be supplied on your own. If you make it to White Mesa and do not feel you have enough to make it back, then you will need to go into San Ysidro and stock up at the general store. If you wish not to do this, then either carry over 140-oz of water or bring a water filtration device. If you choose to leave a cache of water or food, please remove all of your trash at the end of the ride, or the next day.
