San Ysidro Dirty Century

**** PARKING NOTICE ****

Please car pool as there is limited parking
DO NOT park at the MAIN White Mesa parking lot!!

Please make sure to read all rules for this.
This is fully unsupported and you will need to be self-sufficient in order to complete this.

When: Saturday March 23rd, 2013- 8am start for all routes

  • Sign-in before 8am, we will start promptly at 8am.
  • Everyone must sign-out by writing time of day you completed or DNF and indicate which route you did.
  • There will be an official timing device tied to the sign-in sheet clip board.

Where: White Mesa overflow parking lot.

  • Take Hwy 550 from I25 towards San Ysidro.
  • A few miles before San Ysidro there is a left turning lane and signs for White Mesa Bike trails and Ojito Wilderness.
  • Turn left here on to Cabezon Rd (stay left at the first intersection and straight at the next).
  • Drive 5 miles on Cabezon Rd to the White Mesa overflow parking lot on the left just after the cattle guard with the BLM Public Lands sign.

What: Mountain Bike rides of :

  • 98 miles(Full course which includes White Mesa at the END!!!)
    • Must do the Cabezon plus Loop in the counter-clockwise direction!
    • NOTE: To avoid a cluster on White Mesa and to make things harder, we are doing White Mesa at the END!!
    • NOTE:  See White Mesa map below for details on finish which takes the trail that ends at the overflow parking lot.
  • 83 miles(Cabezon plus Loop)
    • Must do the loop in the counter-clockwise direction!
  • 73 miles(Cabezon Loop with White Mesa at end)
    • Must do the loop in the counter-clockwise direction!
    • NOTE: To avoid a cluster on White Mesa and to make things harder, we are doing White Mesa at the END!
    • NOTE:  See White Mesa map below for details on finish which takes the trail that ends at the overflow parking lot.
  • 58 miles(Cabezon Loop only)
    • Must do the loop in the counter-clockwise direction!

  • No warranty, express or implied, use at your own discretion.
  • Garmin users  can download directly into their supported devices from the Garmin Connect pages below. Be sure to a test “Do course” to make sure the track downloaded properly.
  • You can also export the track to GPX from these pages, load into TopoFusion and then download to your GPS. Use this option for non Garmin users and those that above option dosen’t work.

Full 98 mile Route Description

  1. The route starts out with a 8.5-mile section of Cabezon Rd from the White Mesa overflow parking lot to the Natural Gas Compressor Station (NCGS).
  2. From here you take Pipeline Road north for 7 miles (15.5 mile mark) to Ridge Road (BLM 1113).
  3. From here you climb 2.5 miles up to the intersection with BLM 1114 (18 miles mark) which will be on your left at the top of a hill and has a cattle guard. You will be returning from that direction. Continue RIGHT on Ridge Road (BLM 1113)!!
  4. In 5 miles and two barbed wire gates you will cross Pipeline road (23 mile mark). Go Straight! DO NOT turn on to Pipeline Rd.
  5. Continue 0n Ridge Road for another 7 miles until Hwy 279 (30 mile mark).
  6. Turn left on Hwy 279 and ride the pavement for 4.5 miles to where the pavement turns sharp right and 279 turns to dirt road straight ahead (34.5 mile mark).
  7. Continue on the dirt road 279 for just under 1.5 miles (~36 mile mark) and turn right onto the north pipeline road. This road is easy to follow due to all the pipeline markers and it is mostly straight.
  8. Climb the pipeline road for 4 miles to the intersection with BLM 1102 (40 mile mark).
  9. Turn left onto BLM 1102 and follow in for 5.5 miles (45.5 mile mark) to intersection where BLM 1102 goes left.
  10. Turn left to stay on BLM 1102 for another 6 miles till the intersection with 279 (51.5 mile mark).
  11. Turn left onto 279 dirt road for 1.5 miles to the intersection with BLM 1114 (53 mile mark).
  12. Turn right on BLM 1114 for 12 miles around Cabezon Peak back to the intersection with Ridge Road (BLM 1113) (65 mile mark). Be sure to take a left at the two major intersections ~55 mile mark and ~57 mile mark to stay on BLM1114. You will cross through one barbed wire gate after the second major intersection.
  13. Turn right on Ridge Road (BLM 1113) for 2.5 miles back to Pipeline road (~67.5 mile mark).
  14. Turn right on Pipeline road and follow it for 7 miles back to the NGCS (74.5 mile mark).
  15. Turn left onto Cabezon Road and follow it for 8 miles to the main White Mesa parking lot (82.5 mile mark).
  16. Now the fun starts with the White Mesa Trails!! The White Mesa trails are marked with maps at each intersection! Each intersection is numbered. Follow the directions via the numbered intersections – White Mesa Route: 1-2-3-4-6-7-8-9-10-11-12-13-14-15-16-17-18-19-22-12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-21-20-17.
    • Note that when going down the devils backbone you must climb up the embankment at the gas line cut out to continue down the ridge. DO NOT take the switch back down to the left. On the way back you will climb these switchbacks from point 5 to point 4 (Gas line cut out) to get back on the ridge and ride the ridge in reverse. See directional arrows on the map below.
    • Finishing White Mesa (DO NOT go back to the main parking lot!!)
      • When you get back up to sign #3 on the ridge take the trail to the left around the canyon (staying on the more direct path and avoid the mess of trails off to the left) and work you way up to sign #21.
      • Once at #21 stay low to the right and take the double track road #20 down to a sharp left on to an unmarked single track that takes you over to sign #17.
      • At this point take the single track off to your right and follow it off the edge of the mesa passing the “Danger” sign. This is a very sketchy, but fun descent. Walk it if you are not comfortable!!!
      • Follow the trail all the way out. Skip the first right turn out of the ravine and continue down to the old double track and follow in back to the overflow parking lot to finish an EPIC RIDE!

58 mile Cabezon Loop
Route Description

  1. The route starts out with a 8.5-mile section of Cabezon Rd from the White Mesa overflow parking lot to the Natural Gas Compressor Station (NCGS).

  4. In 5 miles and two barbed wire gates you will cross Pipeline road (23 mile mark).
  5. Turn left on to Pipeline Road and go 2.5 miles to 279 dirt road (25.5 mile mark). You will cross the Rio Puerco before getting to 279.
  6. Turn left on to 279 dirt road and go 2.5 miles to BLM 1114 (28 mile mark).
  7. Turn left BLM 1114 for 12 miles around Cabezon Peak back to the intersection with Ridge Road (BLM 1113) (40 mile mark). Be sure to take a left at the two major intersections ~32 mile mark and ~35 mile mark to stay on BLM 1114. You will cross through one barbed wire gate after the second major intersection.
  8. Turn right on Ridge Road (BLM 1113) for 2.5 miles back to Pipeline road (~42.5 mile mark).
  9. Turn right on Pipeline road and follow it for 7 miles back to the NGCS (49.5 mile mark).
  10. Turn left onto Cabezon Road and follow it for 8.5 miles to the White Mesa overflow parking lot (58 mile mark).
