5 – Zuni Mountain 100

What a beautifully fall day in the New Mexico pine forest!! And yet another great day on the bike, making it 5 great days this year!!! The Zuni course is much tougher than it looks with all the bumpy new and old single track, it wears ya down, especially riding a hard tail… We had 60 people sign-up and 49 people show-up. 38 people finished loop1 and only one person, yes only one, finished both loop1 and loop2. Way to go Andy Stevenson!!

Special thanks Bill Siebersma and company for putting on this event!!!

This was my first long ride on the SS. I had a great time and everyone was very friendly. 32 X 17 gearing on a 29er HT was a little too much for this course (for me anyway). I was so happy to see the finish! The last hour or so I was quite dehydrated, and wanted it to be over. Not ever seeing the trails before was a trip. It was like the early nineties during the MTB boom, and everyone was out exploring forest trails trying to find places to ride! Figuring out witch way to go with just a printout of the websote tailmap to go by is fun! The course was pretty-well marked, but its easy to second guess yourself, double back, and then figure out you were going the right way in the first place!
The Post Ride festivities were fun. Thanks to all at Gallup Trail 2010 for hosting! That was some HOT salsa!
Next year I will do two things differently:
    32 X 20 gearing
Bring more water/foods (I forgot to grab my gels!)
Start later (maybe nine?); no use starting early for the 50-mile.

Cheers to all the enduro-riders! See you next year!

  2. Ben Franklin Says:

We brought 6 riders from Pagosa Springs, and all had a great time. We will all be back next year with more riders. Congrats to Mike Clinton (Pagosa ) for the winning time !!! Thanks to Bill and all of the Gallup people for a great fun time. The trails were marked very well, I only took one wrong turn, but did finish with the encouragement of my friends !!! This was my first endurance ride, and looking foward to the next one,

  3. Bill Siebersma Says:

First of all, thanks to all you riders who came out for the race and party! As always, we will try fine tune a few things for next year, but the course will stay the same so we can put more time into preparing the trail instead of gps-ing.

Special thanks to those who contributed to Gallup Trails 2010!! Be assured we will deliver big bang out of every dollar. Getting the Quaking Aspen Trailhead developed so it can be open year round is our priority at the moment.

I would appreciate seeing some mileages posted from you riders as I have no idea other than the gps distance, which tends to vary depending on the sample rate. Any calibrated computer mileages?

I will tone down the salsa a bit next year.

    Hey Bill,
I forgot to turn on the tracking on my GPS, but I did run my bike computer which only showed about 45 miles.

Thanks again for a great even and looking forward to next year!!!
