What an awesome day. Weather was great. I only got sprinkled on, but heard a few got some heavy rain. I beat my time from last year by 43 minutes and this time I was on the single speed. Don’t know how I did that will all the walking I did on EBT.

Way to go Dan with a screaming sub 10hr time on the single speed, which included going almost all the way to the bean and then back up to Kit Carson road.

    See ya all next year!!!

  2. Anthony P. Lopez Says:

Wow! It’s cool to see the finisher names and their times, I only whish I was one of them. I’m sorry I missed the sign out sheet. Yeah, I got lost as stated I would. I wasn’t’ lost for long eventually I was able to find my way for the most part. The hardest part was crossing the logs and reconnecting with the trail. I also thought this was the fun part. I make it just past the arrow and beer bottle left on the road; I believe my computer indicated 18 miles into the ride when I decided to head back. Reasons for bailing: 3 weeks prior I took a really bad fall on a decent, my front derailleur was acting up and I soon realized I hadn’t fully recovered and felt I’d never caught up. I got back to the bean and coffee shop around 10:30 or so. Great Ride! I hope to reconnect with you all soon.

P.S. Mr. Romero I looked for the extra back derailleur I mentioned I might have and didn’t find what you need. Sorry, dude. Hope you find one. Anthony P. Lopez

    Thank you,

    Anthony P. Lopez

Great ride, thanks everyone. Big thanks go to:

“The Sac” for lending me his light
Dom for helping keep me motivated
BIG BIG thanks for John for sticking with me for the last 20 miles or so.

I was feeling pretty good until Osha Pass or so. Then it just felt like someone let the air out of my balloon. I managed to ride most climbs, though in the 34t at about 45rpm. Just chugged along. Made it to Garca park by 6:30 or so and just hoped I could make those last 15 miles in an hour. Nothing doing. John and I rode until twilight, then turned on light and rode maybe 15 more minutes until it just became too dangerous to navigate. The last 2 hours were spent walking the bike down to Taos. At least it wasn’t too cold!

We had at least an hour of delays due to straying off the trail. I vow not to try this again until I have the map in my soon-to-be-purchased Garmin 305.

  4. Rich Capener Says:

Well I started off filling sluggish, might have been three too many beers at Eske’s the night before. I think I slowed down Lenny and Gavin a little on the NBT. Lenny got a jump on us at the truck and never saw him again. As I started to feel better on EBT, Gavin started to run out of power. I talked him into continuing thinking he would bounce back on SBT but that didn’t happen so I stuck with him to Garcia park where he could make a safe return (no GPS and didn’t know the area). SBT, shoot, that made the whole day worth it. That single track is a MTBers wet dream :)

Ok, What can we change to make it better and/or get more people to show up? Here’s what I was thinking:
    1. Find a different route other than the EBT. That trail sucks with tired legs and turns into a hike-a-bike.
    2. Have a official B group that does 40-50 miles of the A groups track.

    Feedback, need more feedback…….

  5. Michal Kulikowski Says:

    Geez,

I kinda wanna do the Double Boundary next year as it stands–unfinished business. But there’ll always be something to challenge oneself with. It is much easier to try and do these sick little rides with others as a loosely organized “race.” This course is pretty sweert in that it is a huge single loop but with the highway allowing a sag and a few bail points for the desperate. I suppose you could have an “official” start at Palo Flechado as a shorter “B” ride. My two cents . . .

  6. Anthony P. Lopez Says:

Here are a couple of ideas that might attract more MTB riders:

If possible try to schedule the event around other MTB events within the commuting area
E-mail upcoming event flyers to bike shops a month or so in advance within a 250 radius asking them to post event
Provide more details about the MTB event i.e.: the trail is very challenging and is not designed for the novice rider, a GPS system is strongly encouraged, bring a camera you might want to document your adventure…
List possible places to stay, camp ground facilities, places to eat, and any family actives for those of us who have children

    Conclude with:

So, if your up for challenge and like competing in extreme MTB conditions come join us, because we’re all a little crazy…and would love the company.

Even though I didn’t complete the loop, I wouldn’t change it because it’s so darn challenging and it’s not for everyone. Yeah, it’s hard but it was designed to be hard, it’s only for those who want to challenge self.

    Hope this Helps,

    Anthony P. Lopez

Wanting to try it again next year.

  7. Dan Durland Says:

Like Lenny said…what an awesome day. Definitely beat my DNF from last year and enjoyed just about every minute of the ride. Congrats to all those that showed up whether you finished or not as this one hell of a ride.
Lenny…way to knock time off riding the single. Maybe you should just forgo the gears for good?

Despite some nav issues and general jacking around, I was stoked to turn the ride in under 10 hours. Funny as most of the nav issues were related to the GPS and would not have occurred if I trusted my memory of the trail and my sub-par instincts. Almost retuning to the Bean at the end was just plain stupidity but the tailwind back up to Kit Carson was a bonus. The Jaracita section was the highlight for me as this was the only section I had not ridden and it is one of the best.

    On the topic of feedback:

    1. I think the route should stand as-is. The EBT section, while not the most rideable section between Bull Spring and Osha, takes you through some beautiful country and terrain that should not be missed. For me, part of the lure of this ride is the varied terrain and non-cookie cutter nature of the course.

    2. If you want more people I would suggest posting copious info on MTBR as that seems to be the best vehicle to reach lots of mtb’ers. I imagine that this years lower turnout was also tied to the cost of fuel and the economy. I know that Kara and I may skip the Zuni based on the last few weeks of economic turmoil and the cost of gas.

Kara has this on her calendar for next year and so do I.

Thanks to Lenny, Rich and David.

Wow, nice job to the finishers, and all those who went out there and gave it a shot! Bummer that I missed the Single Boundary Loop that I love so much. :(
