Hi All,
I have tried several times over the last year to export a .gpx file from the Garmin Connect web site. I can not figure it out. I guess that the motivation for the site is to keep the files within the Garmin ecosystem, but I like to use the files more much more than loading onto a GPS device.
Is it possible to get links directly to the .gpx files (similar to what is provided for some of the other events, such as SFBFL)?
Cheers,
Todd
Hey Todd,
You need to be logged into Garmin Connect to get the export capability. Go figure… Accounts are free, so just create an account and log in and you will see the export options.
Later
Lenny
Hi Lenny,
Thanks for the help here. I have a Garmin Connect account, but I have never seen the export option. It appears that you have to log on before clicking on the link in order for the export option to appear. Thanks again.
Cheers,
Todd
SYDC Pre-ride 2/25 at 9am
All,
I am planning a SYDC pre-ride for Saturday February 25th at 9am. Weather permitting, of course.
We will meet at the Turtle Mountain parking lot and ride loop 1 (83 miles) of the SYDC. This will be group ride pace and typically breaks up into multiple groups depending on how many show up.
I will send out a reminder the week before to see who is planning on attending.
Lenny,
Would it be possible for me to join your pre-ride on 2/25, even if I can’t do the actual ride on 3/24? I live in Durango CO, and would love to check out this trail system.
Michelle
No Worries, anyone that wants to join the pre-ride can. Just so ya know this ride is mostly dirt roads with about 15 miles of single track out at White Mesa.
All,
The pre-ride of the San Ysidro Dirty Century Loop 1 on Saturday is STILL ON!!. Loop 1 is 82 miles and less then 7500ft of climbing. Very fast course. Here is the course info on Garmin Connect. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/60153049
Current weather forecast for Saturday looks awesome!
We will meet at the Turtle Mountain parking lot and start riding promptly at 9am. We will meet back up at TM for food and beer after the ride!! See event page for directions and parking instructions.

This will be group ride pace and typically breaks up into multiple groups depending on abilities and how many show up.
See ya there
Lenny
Lenny/all,
I will be doing the same as last year, dropping Rich off and driving to White Mesa. That means my truck is available as sag for anyone who wants to put their resupply items in.
David
Hey David,
You talking doing this for the pre-ride or the actual event?
Lenny,
This is for the pre-ride.
Sorry about that.
David
I noticed that several folks seemed to do the course on CX bikes last year. I know the vast majority of the course is gravel, but that there is some singletrack; however, I have no idea how technical it is. I’m guessing not too bad. Can anyone comment on this? I’m thinking my FS 29er might be overkill, and debating riding my new gravel weapon (does light singletrack just fine).
Hey Shane, this is from Chris Hereford who always does SYDC on SS CX. Also he is a very good technical ride, so he may have a different view of White Mesa on CX than others…
CX bike is the only way for SYDC. The singletrack isn’t severe enough for an MTB. Just my opinion, after five years on a cx bike on the course. And this has all been on a SSCX bike with 42×18. Suspension isn’t necessary for the long day, but many enjoy the comfort of an mtb. Yes, it is mostly dirt road, with ocassional sand pits, and that’s when I’ll have to walk sometimes.
Awesome! Thanks. I just took possession of an amazing Ti gravel and Ultra-cross racing weapon last week and this will be the first race with it! Perfect timing as the SYDC will be 3 days after I turn 37!
Three questions:
1 – I’m headed down from Boulder, CO on Friday. Anyone have recommendations of a place to stay or spare floor space? (If anyone else wants to carpool ping me)
2 – Lenny – Also wondering if anyone has volunteered to SAG or do a drop at the NGCS?
3 – Are the loop trails rather easy to follow without GPS? (I have an Edge 500, but it doesn’t really do maps so I’m debating getting the real deal now or waiting.)
Hey Shane,
1) No knowledge of hotels beside there are plenty along Hwy 520 (Rio Rancho blvd). Look for one close to Southern Blvd.
2) Yes, Mark Dupuy has volunteered once agian to do the SAG. YEA Mark!
3) Out and back to White mesa is staight foward. You will want the GPS for White Mesa and Cabazon Loop. Stick with your Edge 500. Maps are overrated since most of the stuff we ride isn’t on the maps… Just download the course and stay on that like black line… Also understand the course going in so you know what to do when you it shows mutiple options like at the NGCS or when back tracking on White Mesa.
See ya there!
Hey Shane, please look at my latest post below. If we do move the start, there is plenty of good camping on the BLM land out past White Mesa. Also, the best hotel location will be the ones at I25 and Hwy550.
See ya next weekend!
Lenny, all is good, we have permissions to cross the king ranch property?
Hey John, I left a voice mail for Don King on Thursday and still haven’t heard back…
.
I spent all afternoon (after riding white mesa) driving the roads around Cabazon to create an alternative course which will start/end at the first White Mesa parking lot. I’ll be working out the details tomorrow and post more info once I have the course figured out.
Bummer, thanks for scouting out am alternative.
***** IMPORTANT pending course change *****
The current SYDC course from Rio Rancho to NGCS has a land access issue. Remember the first big white gate and the next two gates before the NGCS? The land between the first two gates is now clearly mark No Trespassing from both sides and the second gate is now locked. I have talked to the land owner (King Brothers Ranch) and haven’t gotten an answer.
Since the event is next Saturday I have started on a backup plan which moves the start/end to the White Mesa overflow parking lot (first one of the left just after the cattle guard). I have a 98 mile (83 dirt road, 15 WM) course mapped out. This is actually a better course as we don’t have to deal with city traffic and the scenery is very cool way out there. There will be a short bit of highway pavement out by the town of San Luis. Main bummer is that we don’t end at the Brewery, so we’ll have to bring our own booze and food for afterwards.
I will create shorter options that are only the dirt roads, 83 (new Cabezon Loop) and 58 (old Cabezon loop).
I’ll be posting the new course info later this week if I don’t get an answer from the King’s by EOD Monday. Just be ready to show up at White Mesa overflow parking lot instead of Turtle Mountain.
Please spread the word to your friends that are planning to ride and don’t see this.
All,
The SYDC course change is now official!! As expected I have not heard back from the land owner.
The SYDC event site has been update with all the new course info and link to GPS tracks.

Please go check it out an let me know if you have any questions.
**** PARKING NOTICE ****

See ya on Saturday!!
Lenny,
Thanks for the update. Back to an original question – since the course changed and it doesn’t really make sense to have a drop/SAG at the NGCS, will there be one at all? If so where? (just trying to plan my fueling/hydration)
Also you mentioned that there’s BLM land near White Mesa – is the overflow parking on BLM land?
Scratch that second question – I read more closely and it appears yes.
Yes, the next logical place for a SAG drop is the intersection of BLM 113 & BLM 114 as we will pass here twice. Also a drop at the main White Mesa parking lot for those planning to do WM at the end. I still have to confirm with Mark if he is still up to doing the drop.
Great! Those are the exact spots I was considering.
Hopefully Mark is still up for that, if no perhaps we can leave a cache.
See SAG update below.
Hi All, Looking forward to the new course …. it is making me consider the idea of doing the White Mesa Loop. How typical is it in this event to ride a CX setup on the White Mesa loop? Cheers, Todd
Hey Todd,
See Chris Hereford’s reply to Shane’s similar question. Note that Chris was really enjoying riding WM on his 29er on Saturday for the fisrt time in a long time not on the CX..
Hi Lenny,
Sorry if I missed it on the website but what is the registration process for the under 18 registrants?
Thanks,
Neil
After thinking about this, I will update the registration process for juniors that requires a physical signed waiver (by parent or guardian) and for the junior to be riding with a knowledgeable adult. The waiver must be brought to the start and handed in when signing in.
The adult must also sign the junior up on-line so we are aware that the junior will be attending and who they will be riding with.
I will update the site tonight with instructions and the waiver that can be downloaded and printed.
I have updated the registration page with instructions for juniors.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
*** SAG Support update ***
Mark (Dup) will still be doing the SAG support for us on Saturday. The drop will be at the intersection of BLM 1113 and BLM 1114. We will also do a small drop at the main White Mesa parking lot for those planning to do White Mesa at the end.
SAG drop rules:
1. Bring your drop bag and water jugs to the start and give them to Dup before 8am.
2. Mark the bag/water for which drop you want them at (BLM1113 or WM).
3. All drop bags and contents must be disposable, i.e. no one will be bringing it back to you so don’t put in anything you must have back.
4. If you do have leftovers you want, you will need to pack them out on your last pass by the drop.
5. Someone else will be doing the clean up, not Dup, and will keep any goodies for their troubles and will throw away the rest.
Weather for Saturday is looking Great!

To whoever loaned me the CX tube, thanks! Please drop me an email and I will send along a new tube. Cheers, Todd (remove spaces todd . ringler at mac . com )
