Please make sure to read all rules for this.  This is fully unsupported and you will need to be self-sufficient in order to complete this.

When: Saturday, July  14th, 2012 at 7am

Where: High Country Restaurant and Saloon in
                 Chama, New Mexico on Highway 17.

What: Epic Mountain Bike Endurance Event of approx 90 miles /11K climbing or 56 miles /52K climbing.

GPS Track in GPX format: 
  – No warranty, express or implied, use at your own discretion.
 - Some Garmin users  can download directly into their supported devices from the Garmin Connect pages below. Currently does not work for the Edge 500. Be sure to test “Do course” to make sure the track dowloaded properly. 
 - You can also export the track to GPX from these pages, load into TopoFusion and then download to your GPS. Use this option for non Garmin users and those that above option dosen’t work.

Chama Redneck Epic Route Descriptions

Short Route Description

 Start at the High Country Restaurant and Saloon in Chama on Highway 17.  Head N on Hwy 17 toward Cumbres Pass.

Approx. 6 miles up turn left on Forest Road 121.

Continue on FR 121 for approx. 6 miles to the Colorado border,  continue straight on FR 121 until you come to a mudslide, you will need to hike a bike across the mudslide and then continue on the road climbing until it till it dead ends at this point you will again need to hike a bike following ribbons to the top of the ridge.  At the top of the ridge you will go right on Trail # 813 this is also known as the Continental Divide Trail.

Ride approx. 11 miles S on the CDT, the trail will take you to Hwy 17 at the top of Cumbres Pass when you reach the highway go left for about 2mile on Hwy 17 to FR 117 at FR 117 turn right and ride about 3 miles then FR 117 becomes FR 87 here you enter New Mexico Carson National Forest just past this gate you will turn right on FR 686 and climb for approx. 3 miles the road will split at the split you should continue right for approx. 1 mile.  There will be a sharp bend in the road at the top of a small climb, just to the right is a sign for Trail #813 also know as the CDT ride this for approx. 6 miles back to Hwy 17 at the top of Cumbres Pass.

Go left on Hwy 17 for approx. 12 miles back to the High Country Restaurant and Saloon in Chama. 

Approximately 56 miles and approximately 5,200 feet elevation feet gain.

Long Route Description

 Start at the High Country Restaurant and Saloon in Chama on Highway 17.  Head N on Hwy 17 toward Cumbres Pass.

Approx. 6 miles up turn left on Forest Road 121.

Lagunitas Campground will be on your left, ride up to the campground and in the campground on your right you will get on the CDT and head north back toward Hwy 17 to the top of Cumbres Pass.   You will cross FR 87 approx. 3 miles from campground, continue on CDT and ride approx. 3 miles to FR 87 from here you will ride FR 87 back toward the T intersection at the T intersection you will make a left just past the T intersection there will be a CDT sign on you left get on the trail here and ride approx. 5 miles and cross FR 87H, continue on CDT for approx. 5 miles, you will come out on a jeep road and go right down to FR 686 and turn left.  Take this for approx. 1 mile and in a sharp bend on your left will be a sign for CDT, take this for approx. 6 miles back to Hwy 17 at the top of Cumbres Pass.

Go left on Hwy 17 for approx. 12 miles back to the High Country Restaurant and Saloon in Chama.

 Approximately 90 miles and approximately 11,000 feet elevation gain.
