We would appreciate any suggestions or comments about the 2008 event to help us plan this year.

Just thought I’d let everyone know that we are starting to prepare for the 2009 Zuni 100. The course will be the same as ‘08, although if the reroute of Lower Sawmill is finished in time there could be a slight change. Lower Sawmill is the first singletrack leg and we have been working to move the trail up the side of ridge a bit and get out of cow country in the big valley. The reroute has some excellent views and joins Purple Haze higher up above the open valley.
Trail conditions have been excellent this year due to regular seasonal rains since spring.

Laura and I were out riding the course two weekends ago 9Labor Day) and the rains have sure made it a bit rougher. The torrential rain we had up there while camping up by Quaking Aspen Labor Day weekend sure didnt help buff the trails out. Lots of pine needles mounded up and loose rock. Other than that it is in great condition in places. Turkey Nest is pretty vague in spots due to low use. Torreon and Plush Trails were in pretty good condition as well. I plan on going back down to preride the entire course the weekend of September 26th or October 3rd. Let me know if anybody is interested.

Looking at last year’s times for the 50, I was surprised by all the fast riders that took in the 5 to 6 hour range to complete the Zuni loop. On paper, Loop 1 at Cochiti is much harder with a bunch more climbing and the faster folks were doing that loop in under 5 hours.
Seems like the Zuni loop should be quite a bit faster. Any input as to why the lap times at Zuni were slower than what you’d expect? Navigational issues? Primitive singletrack? People were doing more of a social pace?
Thanks for any input.

I think this late in the year most people are doing it more casually, but some others did have navigation issues last year….

Grrgh, we hate those (navigation issues) and will try to eliminate them.
Any specifics?

Naw, just some people getting turned around… they do that somethings.

I missed 5 turns in 2007 and one turn in 2008. All mistakes were my fault, riding with my head down – not looking for the flags. Then again, I was riding behind my friend, who led me off track – I think. If the course is marked like last year, then no problem.

Heading to the Zuni’s tonight to pre-ride the course. Any takers? Meeting at 9am at Lake McGaffey. (October 3rd)

What is the total climbing for the 50 or the 100
October 9, 2009 at 4:00 pm |
Hey David,
From last year, my polar shows approx 3800ft for the 50. Since the 100 is the 50 twice it should be 7600ft for the 100.

Bill,
Camping question–I remember there being a restriction on campfires in the camping areas near close to the buildings. Is that in effect again this year? If so, is a fire OK in a portable fire pit/chiminea?
Looking forward to the best bike ride/party in NM.
Tim

They don’t allow fires of any kind at the Wildlife Center Facility. If you camp off the grounds (outside the fence) in the National Forest, fires are fine, no restrictions. We do the pit barbecue off the grounds too, btw.
Kind of a strange group that owns the facility…

Does anyone know if any route changes have been made to the Zuni Mtn course that will be happening this weekend? I’ve never ridden the course before, and so I’m stressing about getting lost. I’ve printed off the route description from 2008, so if any changes happen, would someone please holla’?! Thanks a heap!
October 15, 2009 at 5:21 am |
No route changes. Unless you’re at the head of the pack, follow the bike tracks. Pretty hard to get lost on this course, so no need to worry about that.

The start/finish area for the Zuni 50/100 is just outside the fence for the McGaffey Wildlife Center.
This is where the fire for the pit cooked pig was last year and assume that it will be there again this year.
The 7am starters will appreciate having the fire to warm up by before starting!!
The clip board(s) with the sign in/out sheets will be in this area.
See ya tomorrow!!

I would be interested to know what mileage figures yall recorded, also if it was gps mileage or bike computer mileage.
Thanks for coming out for the race, hope everyone enjoyed the great weather!

Hey Bill, my polar odometer was wacked out so I didn’t get a good reading on it. Last year I had 45 miles and the conscience I got from people this year was 45 miles. My GPS track from this year (with wrong turns cleaned up) is showing ~42 miles. GPS is notoriously short on mileage, so I think 45 miles is fairly accurate.
October 20, 2009 at 6:27 pm |
Bill , did the 50 miler and recorded around 45 on my odometer. Great event and ride, Big Thanks!

I prolly should ask if 29er or 26er too, as 29s record about a 7% shorter distance over the same course theoretically, and pretty close to that by my own observation.
This is just to satisfy my own curiosity, I haven’t had too many complaints that the course was too short.
Zuni Mountains 90 has a ring…
October 22, 2009 at 12:09 am |
Nope, 29ers don’t make the course shorter, but I wish they did..
As with any wheel size ya have to calibrate your bike computer so it is accurate for the size. If using just a GPS, then nothing changes… it is what it is…
October 22, 2009 at 3:31 pm
They don’t make the course shorter but they do follow a smoother, and therefor more direct, path. You can prove it to yourself by comparing the mileages recorded by very accurately calibrated computer/odometers on a 26 and 29. It will be very close to a 7% difference if you do the math.
The gps calculates a straight line between points it records, whereas the trail in reality does not follow a straight line between points, so the fewer hits the device records the less accurate it is for calculating the actual distance the wheel has traveled.
